Happy New Year from Pine Lake and Lorenz!

The start of a new year presents a unique opportunity both to look back in reflection on life’s events and to look ahead to new experiences and new friends. In that spirit, we’re marking 2010 with a reflection from Mary McDonald on what inspired her anthem Yes, My Jesus Loves Me. You’ll no doubt come away from reading it with a new friend, one of many we hope you’ll make over the coming year as we share the thoughts of a different composer each month. We’ve also selected a few of Mary’s other exceptional compositions to present to you, with the hopes that they will create wonderful worship experiences for you in 2010.

Yes, My Jesus Loves Me

Colin Grant Ward was born September 30, 2004 to a loving and grateful family and church family at First Baptist Church, North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. On May 8, 2007, Colin Ward went home to be with his Heavenly Father. In the fall of 2007, I was commissioned by the church to compose an anthem in Colin’s memory. Friends and colleagues prayed with me for God’s anointing on this assignment. A new melody emerged that conveyed the simple yet powerful words of this childlike hymn and seemed to offer reassurance that, regardless of the situation we find ourselves in, God is still watching, caring, and fulfilling His promise of eternity with Him. Just a few months ago, a friend posted a video of the North Carolina All-State youth choir singing Yes, My Jesus Loves Me. As I listened to the young man introducing the song, tears flooded my eyes as he recounted that Colin’s favorite song was Jesus Loves Me. Although he only lived a short time, he would sing this hymn to anyone who would listen. I never knew that part of the story...but God knew...and it was His divine inspiration that lead me to compose this arrangement—and I was reminded again, YES, my Jesus loves ME too!
