Lord, I Know I Been Changed

Since I was a very small child, I have loved spirituals. We had several LPs of them at home from a variety of artists including Mahalia Jackson, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and the Robert Shaw Chorale! Their infectious tunes and simple lyrics were easy enough for a child to understand; yet I found that I enjoyed them even more as I grew up and sang them in high school and college choirs.

For many years I have been doing my own settings of spirituals, usually in musical styles that spring from the 19th-century spiritual tradition: blues, R&B, ragtime, soul, etc. A few years ago, a friend at church brought in Lord, I Know I Been Changed, a spiritual I was unfamiliar with and wanted to perform as a solo. Our praise band worked out an arrangement that relied heavily on the R&B sound of the ’60s and ’70s. I knew right then that I had to capture that sound in a choral setting…and that’s the one you’ll find listed below. The keyboard accompaniment owes a lot to Billy Preston, a man who got his musical start playing keyboards with Andraé Crouch in a California Gospel choir, and went on to his own solo career (as well as playing briefly with the Beatles). If you look for this song on iTunes, you will find many recordings ranging from the very soulful, to a major-key bouncy version. But that’s why I like spirituals: they are resilient, and speak to the soul no matter how we dress them up musically. I hope you experience the joy of knowing that “the angels in heaven done signed your name!”
